A friend of Masumi’s from the record label Proto Sites got in touch, they’d seen our Movement Diary project and wondered if we’d be interested in applying the same method to a music video. We agreed to take a listen and see.
On receiving the EP we listened repeatedly, confused as to how we were going to make a video for this music with such strict rules as we use in the Movement Diaries: Long, unbroken takes; no camera moves; no edit gimmicks; no effects - none of the staple stuff you’d find in a music video.
We spent ages debating what we could do instead: short films, experiments, found footage collages, strange camera rigs, etc. but eventually trusted the instincts of Jonny from the record label, and he was right.
The use of stairs gave us an interesting stage and tool for Masumi to use in her movement, it also made composition consistent and reasonably simple which was useful in the short time we had to shoot.`
Aside from the intro and outro the video is built around unbroken takes of movement 8 bars long with detail shots during the 3 beat-less sections. Again there are no effects save for a couple of instances of reversed motion and I tried to keep the colour correction as natural as possible whilst still taking care of the bright autumn colours.
